The National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) , through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) fosters the development of Disaster Medical Assistance Teams (DMATs) throughout the United States. A DMAT is a group of medical and non-medical personnel trained to provide emergency medical care during a disaster or other catastrophic event.
When local medical resources become overwhelmed, DMATs go to work.
